Steiner school would create traffic problems

It was appropriate to see the letters about the traffic problem at Berkley School and the proposed Steiner school on the same page of last week's Somerset Standard.

Berkley School has traffic problems because it is in a cul-de-sac which has limited parking and leads on to a busy road.

The new Steiner school, if located on the Park Road hospital site, would also be in a cul-de-sac which has limited parking and leads on to an even busier road, the A362.

This school may be able to provide off-street parking for staff, but Berkley has a roll of less than 100 pupils and the Steiner school is planning for an eventual roll of more than 600.

Also, Park Road would not just serve a school. There are a number of residents and businesses for whom it is the only access.

The Steiner school proposal requires a credible traffic assessment as part of the planning application. This must make realistic assumptions about how many pupils will be driven to school and the impact on residents and businesses in the area, including Christchurch Street West, Butts Hill, Weymouth Road and Somerset Road.

With all the traffic problems associated with existing schools in the town, we must make sure that we don't end up with yet another school that makes the headlines and letters pages for the wrong reason.
