Steam buffs on a roll with world record attempt
Obsessions are wonderful things. Whether it is building model cathedrals out of matchsticks, trying to catch that elusive monster pike or restoring and driving massive steam engines, they add to the rich variety of life.
And on the afternoon of Saturday, August 31, at the Great Dorset Steam Fair showground, a whole group of obsessive enthusiasts will come together in the hope of completely flattening the world record for the greatest number of steam rollers in a parade formation over a set course.
Around 110 steam rollers will participate in the world record attempt as part of the GDSF 2013 Roller Special, on a brand new road created in the road-making section at the event. The current record is also held by the Great Dorset Steam Fair; a total of 32 vintage steam rollers passed over a length of new road on August 31, 2003, exactly ten years ago to the date.
The world record attempt has been officially acknowledged by Guinness World Records Ltd and one of the independent witnesses will be Colin Tyson, of Old Glory Magazine – a well respected figure in the steam industry.

Great Dorset Steam Fair managing director Martin Oliver said: "We are attempting this on our busiest day because it will be a breathtaking sight to offer our paying visitors. If you are planning to come along on the Saturday, listen for the announcements because you won't want to miss this!"
Some of the requirements for the world record attempt are as follows:
All vehicles must be standard steam rollers with a heavy roller used for smoothing road surfaces.
All vehicles participating in this world record attempt must be moving – it is not acceptable merely to park them in a row.
The attempt will feature a unique range of steam, petrol and diesel rollers from the leading manufacturers throughout the history of road rolling. As well as examples from the more common manufacturers, there will be those on show from the rarer makes of roller with some even attending from abroad.
Annually the Great Dorset Steam Fair goes through ten miles of electric cable, 200 tonnes of coal and 550 barrels of beer!
Over 200,000 visitors attend the Great Dorset Steam Fair each year from the UK and all over the world. This year there will be over 90 acts performing on six stages across the site.
There are over 170 acres allocated for pre-paid public camping that will accommodate a staggering 5,000 individual units (caravans and tents etc). At the busiest time of Steam Fair week there will be between 15,000 and 20,000 show visitors camping on site. More than 60 Showman's engines with their gleaming, twisted, brass will generate the light and power for the old roundabouts and swing-boats.
Ten large corn ricks will be threshed at this year's show and a dozen saw benches will feature in the wood sawing area.
Bus operator Damory is to provide extra bus services to the Great Dorset Steam Fair in a bid to help reduce the amount of cars travelling to the popular annual event near Tarrant Hinton. Visit www.salisburyreds.co.uk
