St John’s Primary School celebrates success!
St John's Primary School has become one of the first schools in the district to be awarded the Healthy Schools Certificate by NHS B&NES and Bath & North East Somerset Council – a major step towards achieving the prestigious Director of Public Health Award.
This new Award has been developed locally and was launched in April this year. It recognises and rewards schools, early years settings and further education colleges which support the health and wellbeing of their children and young people.
St John's, in Midsomer Norton, achieved the Healthy Schools Certificate by reviewing all of its health related work and setting new targets. The pupils demonstrated current successes by producing a film about the school's new spiritual garden which they helped to design.
Paul Scott, Acting Director of Public Health for Bath and North East Somerset, who chairs the Awarding body, said: "I would like to congratulate St John's Primary School for all the work they have put into achieving their Healthy Schools Certificate as part of the Director of Public Health Award. Their commitment to health and wellbeing is obvious and, as a flagship Food for Life partnership school, we were particularly impressed by the whole school approach to food."

The Director of Public Health Award is a health and wellbeing programme commissioned by NHS B&NES for all educational settings. The schools programme is developed and delivered by Bath & North East Somerset Council.
Councillor Dine Romero (Lib-Dem, Southdown), Cabinet Member for Early Years, Children and Youth, said: "Everyone at St John's Primary School has done so well in winning their Healthy Schools Certificate, and we hope their continuous efforts to improve will inspire others to follow suit. Bath & North East Somerset Council supports schools working towards the Director of Public Health Award as a mechanism for school improvement through tackling key health issues and reducing inequalities."
Paul Scott will be presenting the Healthy Schools Certificate to St John's Primary School at a special assembly in the school on Monday 10 December 2012.
The school can now focus on obtaining the Healthy Outcomes Certificate. To gain this it has to show how is has improved the health and wellbeing of its pupils. Once St John's Primary has achieved both certificates, it will qualify for the Director of Public Health Award.
