Sports look forward to next round following tough win
WESTLAND Sports cruised through to the semi-finals of the Magna Dorset Premier League Cup with a 3-0 victory over Chickerell United.
Sam Jarman put the visitors ahead in the opening few minutes before goals from Marc Caines and Matt Day ensured the Yeovil side's progression.
Assistant manager Neil Waddleton was delighted with the win and is relishing the tie in the next round, when they will meet Swanage Town and Herston.
He said: "Chickerell are a good side and they battled hard but we got a dream start and scored one of the goals of the season in the first three or four minutes.
"After that point the game got quite scrappy and they made it difficult for us but they never really troubled us.
"The midfield won the game for us really with their challenging and the defence remained solid. The most pleasing thing was that we kept another clean sheet which compliments the whole team because we defend from the front.
"Our goalkeeper Ashley Knibbs has been delighted with the run of clean sheets recently and he's been playing excellently.
"When you looked at the tie between Portland (United) and Swanage (Town and Herston) and their league positions you would have expected Portland to go through, but Swanage won in extra time.
"It sets up quite an intriguing tie for us and it's a difficult place to go. They can be a dangerous side on their day. In the back of our minds we know all the players will be focused because they all want to play in a cup final."
Westland, currently third in the league, are on Somerset Senior Cup duty this weekend, travelling to Cheddar.
WESTLAND Sports reserves missed the opportunity to climb clear at the top of the Dorset County League First Division, losing 3-1 to Mere Town. Danny Call got the Yeovil side's goal.
