The search is on to find the most talented person in Somerton – and raise money for a local cause in the process.

People of all ages are being encouraged to showcase their skills in the first-ever Somerton’s Got Talent competition, which will benefit the Roundabout Pre-school which is fundraising for a new building.

From the weird to the wonderful, anyone who thinks they have what it takes to be the winner, or just wants to entertain and have fun, is invited to audition.

The concept, made famous on TV’s Britain’s Got Talent, has inspired the school which hopes the fun event will appeal to all ages.

Ben Taylor, chairman of the Roundabout Pre-school, believes there is a lot of undiscovered talent in the town.

He said: “There is definitely talent to be found in Somerton. I am always meeting parents and young people who can do things so we wanted to come up with a way to help them share their abilities.

“It can be just anything really. From talented pets and comedians to singers, dancers, rappers and poetry, we want everyone to get involved.”

It is free to enter and everyone is being urged to come along to one of the monthly audition nights which will be held in the Parish Rooms on Saturday, October 27, November 3, or November 10, from 7.30pm.

A panel of judges will select four acts from each audition night to go through and compete in the grand final on Saturday, December 8.

The finals will be a ticketed show with a free bar at the Edgar Hall from 7pm.

The audience will then vote for the act they think deserves to win the first prize of £100.

All the proceeds from the event will go towards the school’s new building fund as the current one is no longer fit for purpose.

So far the school has raised £70,000 but it still has a long way to go to reach the £185,000 needed.

The pre-school is desperately trying to replace its crumbling 50-year-old building.

The building has a life expectancy of between one and three years and members of the voluntary committee which runs it fear that if the building is condemned they will have no choice but to close.

Booking is essential for the auditions, which should be family friendly. To enter, call 07854 856469 or e-mail somertontalent@gmail.com.
