The South West is braced for temperatures as low as those being seen at the South Pole today, and possibly snow at the weekend.

Forecasters warned that the below-zero temperatures are likely to remain for the rest of the week, and milder weather is not expected until Monday.

The cold weather is due to an area of high pressure sat over the UK, which is also sat above Sweden and Norway. The cold air that is moving in the high pressure system circulates from those colder countries to the UK, bringing us their cold weather.

A charity which cares for the elderly warned that winter brings risks for them. Michelle Mitchell, charity director general at Age UK, said: “It may have been relatively mild so far this year but the winter can be a dangerous time for older people.”
