Residents in parts of Somerset are being told to beware of a possible flood threat tonight as more torrential rain hits the county.

The Environment Agency has this evening issued two flood alerts following a day of heavy downpours, and it comes following an announcement by the Met Office that it has upgraded its severe weather warning to amber.

Flood alerts have been put in place for areas in South East Somerset around the upper reaches of the Rivers Yeo, Cam and Wriggle, as well as the River Tone catchment which includes Hillfarrance Brook, Halsewater Stream, and the River Tone and tributaries.

The Environment Agency has reported that river levels are rising after 10mm of rain fell over the past 24 hours, and that tonight's forecast of further torrential downpours could see the situation worsen.

"Further heavy rain is forecast between midnight and 7am on Monday," said the Agency this evening.

"There is some uncertainty over the location of the heaviest rain which could be up to 80mm.

"River levels on the River Yeo at Sherborne Lake are rising, River Wriggle at Chetnole are stable, River Cam at Weston Bampfylde are falling, Stoford and Barwick Streams at Stoford are stable.

"River levels on the River Tone at Greenham, River Tone at Bishops Hull, River Tone at Taunton are rising, Hillfarrance Brook at Milverton and Halsewater Stream at Halsewater are stable."

The Met Office's amber alert for heavy rain will be in place from 6pm this evening until 9am tomorrow morning.

"Periods of heavy rain, including some torrential downpours, are likely to occur across parts of the South West during Sunday evening and the first part of Monday," said the weather forecaster.

"This will be in addition to the rain which will have fallen during the day on Sunday.

"The public should be prepared for an increased risk of both surface water and river flooding during this period."
