The Met Office said around 10 to 15cm of snow could fall in many areas, and that there is a risk of more than 25cm falling over high ground.

Met Office chief forecaster Eddy Carroll said: "The snow is expected to be heaviest through Friday morning, slowly weakening and clearing east during the second half of the day.

"Clearly there is the potential for significant disruption to people's plans. We should all keep up to date with the latest weather forecasts, advice from local agencies and be prepared to change our travel plans if necessary."

The Met Office said a band of rain will push into the West on Friday morning, turning to sleet and snow.

Parts of north west England, Wales and the West Midlands are at particular risk of seeing significant snowfall, but accumulations of between 10cm and 15cm are expected in the amber warning area which includes parts of Somerset.

That figure could rise to 20cm of snowfall over higher ground in the area.

Weatherman Ian Fergusson warned his Twitter followers this morning that 12 hours of snow could sweep across the region on Friday.

Ian @fergieweather tweeted: "Confidence now increasing re disruptive snow Friday. Potential for 12hrs snow across @bbcpointswest region frm Fri AM to Fri night."
