Sniffer dogs will soon be joining the fight against drug use and antisocial behaviour.

Specially trained police dogs are to be taken into pubs and clubs to identify drugs and recreational drug users.

The latest weapon in the fight against late-night disorder has been revealed by Midsomer Norton’s new police beat manager PC Phil Millen.

The 39-year-old, who lives in Paulton and grew up in Peasedown St John, said he was pleased to be joining the neighbourhood policing team as a street drinking ban is to be brought in.

PC Millen said: “The Community Alcohol Partnership and the Designated Public Place Order is about changing drinking culture through education and enforcement and making the town safer for families and individuals going out.

“We will now be working closely with licensees in the area to stamp out the underlying drug culture in Midsomer Norton and will be carrying out drug tests in licensed premises.”

He said it would not be possible to take sniffer dogs out every week but that he hoped the random nature of the checks would also work as a deterrent for those thinking about using drugs.

Alongside fighting crime, PC Millen is keen to have more contact with the community and will be holding a weekly drop-in session at Midsomer Norton Town Hall. He will be there every Wednesday from 10am to noon starting from February 27.

He added: “From a police perspective, it will be great to have a place where people can drop in for a drink and a chat and to share information. The community are our eyes and ears and we need their help to enable us to paint a picture of crime and disorder.”
