Snapshot of Jason
Fifteen years ago I met a shy young man in the reception of our offices in Wells.
I had advertised in the paper for a news and sport photographer, and been swamped by the response.
Piles of impressive portfolios and applications arrived, presenting a difficult task to reduce them into a shortlist.
Then our receptionist called to say someone would like to see me.

The young man said little, preferred to look at the floor rather than me, pressed a black A2 portfolio into my hands and was quickly out the door. Back at my desk I opened the portfolio and found every photograph was of aeroplanes. The pictures were good but devoid of the people which are essential for local newspapers.
This was disconcerting but there was something about the young man so I added him to the shortlist of applicants, who were all sent on assignments for the Mid Somerset Series. Most had impressive CVs. The young man called Jason Bryant did not, but I decided to trust my instinct and take a chance.
Adding Jason to our team proved one of my best decisions.
He is a brilliant photographer, one of the very finest I have known in my 43 years on many different newspapers, and totally loyal to mid-Somerset although he could get a job anywhere.
Thanks and keep up the good work, Jason.
Philip Welch
