Gillingham claimed only their fourth Coca-Cola League One away point against a disjointed Yeovil Town on Saturday.

The Glovers’ bubbly performance against Wycombe Wanderers seven days earlier seemed a distant memory as the Huish Park hosts struggled to find their feet in attack.

Both teams hit the frames of their respective goals in a frantic start to the second period. However, this was to prove the only real action in a match lacking attacking quality.

The Gills entered the match in search of their first away win of the season, but were unable to capitalise on a dogged showing from Yeovil.

However Glovers’ boss Terry Skiverton, pictured above, saw it as a point gained, rather than two dropped and said: “I am very happy with the result.

“In the current climate and conditions it is a bit more difficult, and you are waiting for the ball to come on to your foot.

“It was a clean sheet, which is something we have not done for a while, and we really ground out a performance.

“I know that they hit the post, but we finished very strongly, and on another day we may have nicked it.

“It did not quite go for us in the opposition box today, but we are on the back of scoring four so I am not going to be too disappointed.”

Skiverton made just one change to the side that had beaten Wycombe Wanderers 4-1 seven days earlier, with the injured Gavin Tomlin replaced by Tottenham Hotspur loanee Ryan Mason.

New signing Arron Davies, who has joined from Brighton on a temporary basis, missed out on a place in the match-day squad because of restrictions on loanee numbers.

A subdued opening to the match was characterised more by the influence of Glovers’ physio Simon Baker than that of the 22 players on the pitch.

After 10 minutes he had to tend to defender Stefan Stam, who appeared to re-open a cut sustained at Wycombe following an aerial challenge.

Two minutes later Baker was back on the playing surface following another lengthy stoppage, as Mason and Gills’ midfielder Adam Miller were left rolling in pain after a strong 50-50 tackle.

In a half devoid of any genuine quality, both teams struggled for rhythm in attack and Gillingham had to wait until  injury-time at the end of the period for their best chance in the final third.

Dennis Oli laid off the ball for Curtis Weston in a central position and the striker’s stinging shot was tipped over the bar by Yeovil goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

The Glovers best chance of the half came on five minutes, when Dean Bowditch’s shot from 14 yards was blocked by a last-ditch challenge.

The start of the second half was a stark contrast to the first, with both teams engineering chances.

First, Danny Jackman tried his luck from the edge of the Yeovil penalty area, only to hit the empty terrace.

Moments later Darren Dennehy climbed highest under little pressure to meet a wide free-kick, but could not guide his header goalwards.

At the other end, Nathan Smith’s speculative cross had Gills’ keeper Alan Julian back-tracking, and a finger-tip save deflected the ball on to the crossbar.

After 55 minutes, Weston appeared to have beaten McCarthy, rounding the on-loan Reading stopper. However, his shot struck a post and bounced kindly for McCarthy to gather.

On 69 minutes Mason fended off the presence of a Gillingham marker to turn and shoot from 25 yards. His shot possessed power but lacked accuracy and crept wide of the target.

Four minutes later he tested Julian with a shot from a similar distance but on the other side of midfield. The keeper athletically pushed away the ball after Mason latched on to substitute Craig Alcock’s deep pass.

With 10 minutes remaining, Gills’ substitute and top-scorer Simeon Jackson headed narrowly over after Kevin Maher had exploited space on the right to cross.

The Canadian international had the beating of Steven Caulker in the air, but could not get sufficiently over the ball to trouble McCarthy.

Yeovil Town (4-4-2): McCarthy; Forbes, Caulker Stam (Alcock, 46), Smith; Mason (Murtagh, 79), Tudur Jones, MacDonald, Welsh; Williams, Bowditch. Subs not used: Murray, Downes, Hutchins, Roberts

Gillingham (4-4-1-1): Julian; Fuller, Richards, Dennehy, Nutter; Oli, Miller (Barcham, 86), Maher, Jackman; Weston; Walker (Jackson, 77). Subs not used: Royce, Bentley, Palmer, Gowling, Rooney.
