Sixth success for The George Inn, Croscombe
PETER and Veryan Graham of The George Inn, Croscombe, are celebrating their sixth year as one of the UK’s Top Ten Landlords, according to the Good Pub Guide 2014.
The George first came to the attention of Good Pub Guide readers when in 2008 it won the UK New Pub of the Year, and it continues to be acknowledged as one of the best of over 5,000 pubs noted in the guide.
Editors Alisdair Aird and Fiona Stapley said: “What makes a good pub is its atmosphere. You should be able to feel at home there, and feel not just that you’re glad you’ve come but that they’re glad you’ve come. A good landlord or landlady makes a huge difference here; they can make or break a pub.”
The Good Pub Guide describes the George as: “Carefully renovated, warmly welcoming and family run coaching inn with informative Canadian landlord, enjoyable food, good local beers, and attractive garden.”

To celebrate their acknowledgement, Peter and Veryan held their 20th Taste of the Mendips Beer Festival at the weekend, featuring 15 local beers.
There was fresh pizza from their new hand-built wood-fired pizza oven, and live music on Saturday night from the Flatland Boogie Band.
Peter and Veryan pride themselves on their drinks. They normally keep six quality real ales on at any one time. Their King George the Thirst is brewed exclusively for them by Blindman’s Brewery in Leighton, just five miles outside of Shepton.
Five local ciders are also kept on tap including 88, produced from 88 varieties of apples in an orchard in Shepton, and Thatchers, brewed 15 miles away.
