Sir John Major and Peter Snow among famous names at Wells Festival of Literature
ONE of the highlights of the city’s calendar is here as some of the biggest names in the world of literature have come to Wells for the annual festival of literature.
With talks from everyone from former Prime Ministers to TV historians there’s no shortage of variety at this year’s festival.
It all kicks off today with Dr Michael Mosley’s talk about the Fast Diet in St Thomas’s Church.
He has researched the age-old practice of intermittent fasting and discovered that not only does it provide a sustainable method of reducing body weight, but – by sending the body into repair mode – it reduces the risk of a range of diseases, from diabetes, asthma and arthritis to cardiovascular disease and cancer, as well as slowing the ageing process and improving brain function.

He’s followed by one of the most recognisable faces on British TV, Peter Snow, who will be talking about his book, When Britain Burned the White House; the 1814 Invasion of Washington.
In August 1814 the British Army defeated the Americans outside Washington, forcing President James Madison to flee the White House mid-supper.
In a week’s time former PM Sir John Major will be reminiscing about his father’s career in music hall and Tracey Chevalier, author of the Girl with the Pearl Earring, will be rounding off a fantastic week.
