Shrewsbury Town v Yeovil Town: Glovers aim to close in on play-off places

Yeovil Town manager Gary Johnson has identified this week’s two away games as vital in their bid to creep up on the play-off spots.

The Glovers travel to Shrewsbury Town tonight before visiting Crewe Alexandra on Saturday. They enter their first ever clash at the Greenhous Meadow on the back of their third win in four outings and as one of four clubs on 16 points in npower League One.

A 2-1 success over ten-man Bury on Saturday took them to within six points of the division’s top six, Byron Webster and Sam Foley scoring for the Glovers.

Johnson said: “It was a good win in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and in our last home game against Colchester United.

“Every win at this level is a good win and today was a difficult one because of the nature of it. But we have now got two away games that we have got to get something from if we are going to get ourselves just behind those play-places.”

Yeovil’s weekend goals came either side of Dominic Poleon’s leveller and after Zac Thompson was sent off in the first half for a two-footed tackle on Keanu Marsh-Brown.

Johnson conceded fans would have expected more from their team against the Shakers, but said the win builds confidence as they travel north twice in five days.

“We have won three out of four, which is nice, and it should have been four out of four after being 2-0 up at Tranmere Rovers,” he said.

“But you gain in confidence and it is another three points at this level. I know people were expecting a bit more from the position we were in and them being down to ten men but it is not easy.

“This level is not easy unless your budget is a lot higher than everybody else’s and of course it’s not. We had to pick them up a little bit, they were a little bit down that it was that close. But we picked them up and we are looking forward to the next two games.”
