Clarks Village in Street is going green by recycling food waste into renewable energy.

The outlet shopping centre's waste management provider, Futur, has joined forces with the UK's leading food waste recycler, PDM Group. Together they will collect food waste from all of the centre's catering facilities and convert it into green power at a national bio mass to energy facility.

It is hoped that this will keep around 140 tonnes of food waste out of land fill every year. Futur hopes that this move will also reduce carbon emissions and fuel consumption, as waste removal will now be undertaken fortnightly.

John Turner, deputy centre manager for Clarks Village, said: "It's no longer acceptable for businesses to throw everything into landfill sites. Finding a sustainable solution for our waste was really important for all our outlet stores, as we already recycle all our plastic, cardboard and waste clothing. With this food waste recycling contract we've managed to reach a 76 per cent recycling rate, which is really positive."
