Pauline Alvis, making a return visit for our October meeting, gave a most interesting talk about the year in her life when her husband, John, became High Sheriff of Somerset.

This meant that Pauline was his "sherina", a name given to her by the Bishop of Bath and Wells.

When John accepted the invitation, neither of them were quite sure what it entailed but it proved to be a wonderful time in their lives, during which they met not only members of the Royal Family, but also visited Buckingham Palace. They met people in all walks of life, visited prisons, sat in court proceedings and met deprived youngsters.

Audrey Cox reported on the outing to Plymouth, which was much enjoyed and was the last outing of the year.

Tea followed and the meeting closed at 4pm.

The next meeting is on November 1, when the speaker will be Isabel Lillico.
