SHERBORNE Town suffered defeat for the first time in the Toolstation Western League First Division this season as they went down to 2-1 at home to Shepton Mallet.

Shepton, who maintained their top-of-the-league status with the win, started well and scored twice in the first half to give Sherborne an uphill task in the second period. Aaron Mead pulled a goal back with 19 minutes to go but the hosts were unable to find an equaliser.

Sherborne have so far enjoyed some promising early season form but cup competitions have left them with games in hand rather than points on the board and they occupy 15th position.

Manager Jamie Manley is remaining upbeat and explained that his players will provide a response against Warminster Town on Saturday.

He said: "It was quite a close game and we had chances and hit the post and crossbar. All of the lads worked hard. I am a bit disappointed but we will go again. There is no point in being disheartened about it. I know everyone is disappointed – I know they care and they want to win every game so it makes my job easier.

"We are going to bounce back and I know we will come out all guns blazing against Warminster on Saturday. They are new in the league like we are so it will be nice to go there. It is a nice place to go and I will have the lads ready and raring to go."

Swanage Town and Herston's first half strike was enough to beat Sherborne's reserves in the Magna Dorset Premier League.

SHERBORNE Town under-18s bounced back from FA Youth Cup disappointment to beat Poole Town Wessex 5-0 in the Dorset County Youth League.

Somerset Floodlight Youth League outfit Chippenham Town triumphed 2-1 before Sam Smith (penalty), Jonathan Majin, Johann Kirsten, Ekoh Sagoe and Nnamdi Ikeazor ensured weekend success.
