Shepton Mallet Prison one of six old jails to be closed

Cell doors are set to slam shut for the last time at Shepton Mallet Prison.

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has announced that the oldest working prison in the country is to close, along with five other old jails.

The  MoJ says it also plans to build a new super prison with 2,000 places in either London, the North West of England or North Wales.

HMP Cornhill was built in 1610. During the Second World War, the site housed American GIs and nationally important documents.

Justice Secretary Chris Grayling said: “We have to bring down the cost of our prison system, much of which is old and expensive.”

Other prisons to be closed are Bullwood Hall in Essex, Canterbury, Gloucester, Kingston in Portsmouth and Shrewsbury.

Camp Hill on the Isle of Wight, as well as prisons in Chelmsford and Hull, are to be partially closed.
