Shepton Mallet Carnival "join in the spectacle"
SHEPTON Mallet Carnival committee has launched a new fundraiser to allow everyone at the event “to feel part of the magical spectacle that carnival is”.
In a bid to get more money spent at the carnival, fluorescent glow-in-the-dark spectacles will be on sale for everyone attending to wear during the evening.
Janet Fulford, a member of the organising committee, said: “Carnival in Shepton Mallet is all about light and colour to brighten up the winter night and there is no better way to enjoy the event than by joining in and wearing these carnival themed spectacles.
“The aim is for everyone at the event to be able to join in and wear them during the procession. Imagine the sight and atmosphere all the way along the route if spectators, marshals, collectors, police, judges and Carnival Club road crews were all wearing them.”
The spectacles will cost £1 and are on sale in various shops in Shepton in the run up to the event and will also be available on the night. All proceeds will be added to the street collection and distributed to the local groups who help collect on the night and other charities in the local area.
The spectacles have been sponsored by local opticians Christopher Young Opticians and the shop is selling pairs.
This year on the streets of Shepton collectors will have bright new charity collecting buckets.
Mrs Fulford said: “Local businesses support carnival in a number of ways and this year we were in desperate need of new collecting buckets. In the past we have been able to borrow these but this option was no longer available to us.”
Right Price DIY and DIY Screwfix provided the committee with 200 buckets, complete with lids and stickers.
