Shepton Mallet streets were positively glowing last night as the fantastic illuminated Guy Fawkes Carnival weaved its way through the town.

Thousands of people wrapped up in their cosiest winter woollens and lined the streets to watch the glittering procession pass them by.

The drama of carnival was all too real last night with one carnival cart still on the road a mile away from Shepton Mallet five minutes after the town’s big parade set off. But the carnival spirit of all those taking part was clear to see, from the Italian elegance of Yeovil-based Rebecca Wilton’s Venezia masquerader’s entry, above, to the exuberant hospitality of Wick Carnival Club, of Glastonbury’s Be Our Guest and Crusaders Carnival Club’s breezy circus girls. Another blessedly dry night brought out a big crowd. The parade moves to Midsomer Norton tonight and Wells tomorrow

Over 100 entries drifted through the town playing magical music to match their excellently crafted floats and costumes.

No umbrellas were needed this year as the night remained dry but cold throughout.

One local entry included children and adults involved in the Save Shepton Skate Park project and saw a group skating through the streets, to raise awareness about the state of their skate park.

Among the highlights were Arctic Attack by Club 2000 CC who dazzled spectators with their floating arctic wonderland billowing smoke and stunning ice-Viking characters aggressively waving their in time to rousing music that had the crowd in raptures.

One Shepton Mallet mum brought her six-year-old son along to his first carnival in Shepton Mallet last night, and she described him as "astounded and amazed," by the scale and splendour of the event.
