The closure caused tailbacks of more than seven miles on the northbound carriageway, leaving motorists facing delays of up to three hours.

Traffic was moving very slowly on the southbound carriageway, with heavy congestion between junctions 20 and 18 and delays of around an hour.

The Highways Agency said the motorway would not reopen before 6.30pm this evening.
