SENIOR business figures in Bridgwater have met several key organisations to discuss ways they can reinvigorate the town's retail environment.

Bridgwater Chamber of Commerce met senior Sedgemoor District Council members, the town council and letting agents among other bodies to forge a partnership.

A chamber survey has found the rate of empty town centre shops is currently 16 per cent, which means in the depth of the recession, 84 per cent of retail units are open and trading. This is a better position than most towns across the country.

The meeting highlighted the potential Bridgwater has to develop its existing retail offer to make it a top shopping place in Somerset.

A chamber statement said: "The meeting discussed the issues faced by lettings agents, landlords and prospective tenants to find ways in which long-term solutions can be found, including specific business support initiatives and specialist advice as well as schemes like Retail Ambassadors which would see business people working with local schools."

The meeting also discussed the district council's new ShopJacket scheme, which has transformed the former Bridgwater Bookshop, at 34 High Street, with a chocolate shop-themed picture front, and the former Lisa's shop on High Street, where Sydenham Camera Club display some of their work.

The statement added: "These are two examples that show what can be achieved to improve the look of the town centre."

Further meetings are arranged to ensure that town centre regeneration remains a focus.

The chamber welcomes further opinions on alternative business solutions and can be contacted online at www.bridgwa terchamber.org.uk.
