Frys 2nd XI 1 Mendip Ladies 2nd XI 5

Mendip put the previous week's defeat behind them to return to winning ways with a solid victory over local rivals Frys.

Mendip's first-half performance was far from convincing, though, and Frys played better than their lowly league position suggested.

The visitors were only one goal to the good at half-time, thanks to centre forward Sharon Watts, but a forthright team-talk from captain Jackie Browning and some positional changes produced a much-improved display after the break.

Watts scored two more to complete her hat-trick, connecting with powerful deliveries into the D, while Mendip player of the match Sarah Whittaker worked tirelessly to keep Frys' own attacks at bay. Emily Skyrme also worked hard, often playing the ball out of defence and beating several Frys players on her way.

Mendip increased their lead with a goal from Hannah Brooks-Sculley, who was perfectly placed in the D to connect with a left-wing cross.

With victory now looking certain, the visitors let their defensive guard down to allow Frys to pull one back but Mendip had the final word when Karen Inns sent a reverse-stick shot into the net following a goalmouth scramble.

On Saturday, Mendip face a sterner test when they host Frys 1st XI.

Mendip Ladies 3rd XI 0 Hanham 1st XI 9

Mendip 3rd XI suffered another heavy defeat as table-topping Hanham struck nine times on Saturday.

The visitors were the stronger team throughout, taking an early lead and consolidating their position with further goals in both halves.

Despite the scoreline and their obvious disadvantage, the young and inexperienced Mendip team showed gritty determination and created second-half chances thanks to some skilful attacking moves.

Stalwart midfielders Brenda Scott and Emma Moffat shared the player of the match award.

Mendip Ladies 1st XI suffered a 3-2 defeat at home to Somerset Gryphons on Saturday and visit bottom side Shepton Mallet this weekend.
