The roadside giants of England, the Angel of the North and Bridgwater’s Willow Man, are to be dwarfed by a sculpture over the Scottish border in Gretna.

The 37-metre Star of Caledonia resembles a thistle, an atom and a map of Scotland and will cost £4.2 million.

The Angel of the North is 20 metres high, eight higher than Somerset’s M5 giant. Government funding has been pledged to the tune of £1 million for the sculpture by Cecil Balmond.
