School staff to keep safety watch after pupil injured while crossing road

A head teacher of a Yeovil school said extra staff will be monitoring road safety after an accident near the school last week.

A Year 7 pupil at Preston School, on Monks Dale, was crossing Preston Road on Friday when he was in collision with a van at around 3pm.

One rapid response vehicle and an ambulance attended. The boy was taken to Yeovil District Hospital with head injuries which were not thought to be serious. A police spokesman said they were called to help with traffic.

Tony Bloxham, principal of Preston School, said the boy was well enough to attend school on Monday.

He said: “An ambulance was called pretty quickly but it was less serious than we thought. Both my deputies were on the scene very quickly.

“We are very relieved that the boy is fine and we were delighted to welcome him back to school.”

Mr Bloxham said there were crossing areas marked out on the road but that not all students use them. Staff at the school will be monitoring how students cross the road.

He added: “The student in question chose to cross the road standing between two cars. We have reinforced across the school a message of appropriate and sensible behaviour with regard to road safety.

“When we have the best part of 1,000 students leaving a site at any one time, everyone needs to be paying attention.”
