School is now an academy
St Cuthbert's Infants School, Wells, became an academy on November 1. The change in status means that the school is now independent of local authority control.
This gives it greater control over its budget, curriculum and school organisation.
The decision came after an 18 month period of discussion by the governors who came out overwhelmingly in favour of the conversion.
The governors are keen to point out that this change in status will not have any significant impact on the existing philosophy and ethos of the school.

Together with head teacher, Vicky Flicker, the governors are confident that the move will allow the school to progress at a time of increased uncertainty for public services.
The main difference will be more control delegated to the head, governors and staff. The school has appointed a part-time business manager to reduce the head's workload.
A spokesman for the school said: "Conversion to academy status is an exciting step by the school which will mean that all children staff and parents can look forward to the future at St Cuthbert's Infant School with optimism and confidence.
"Although academy status offers schools significant freedoms, there will be no significant change to the core operation of the school and no changes to the school's name, its admissions arrangements or term and holiday dates.
"We are already in discussions with other local academies from whom we have sought advice before making this decision in a bid to work together for the general good of the pupils."
Co-operation with other schools when buying services from both the local authority and other providers will aim to deliver savings which can be put towards improving educational standards.
There will also be the possibility of obtaining local sponsorship.
When purchasing services, the governors have adopted the policy of working as closely as possible with local providers and have already appointed a solicitor and an accountant who meet this criterion.
