Savage Animals triumph
The Axbridge Animals windsurfing team, all aged between 10 and 15, triumphed over rivals Croft Farm Flyers from Tewkesbury in the first Team15 event of the season, held at Bristol Corinthian Yacht Club, Axbridge.
It was a family affair, with Georgina (10), Isabelle (12) and Alexander (13) Savage showing great determination and skill, each taking first place in their respective classes for the Animals.
The 6.8 Techno fleet was hotly contested between Animals' Seb Cooper (14) and Joe (13) and Sam (15) Barnes. No mistake went unpunished, but Seb's experience and Zone Squad training paid off in the final result.
Conditions were difficult, with gusty wind in varying directions, so Animals' Jenny Bridgewater (14) from Cheddar and Flyers' Jack Bassett (9) were awarded merit trophies for determination, having coped with the conditions at their first-ever T15 event.
The next round of the T15 inter-club series will be held at South Cerney Outdoor Education Centre on July 5, and the youngsters are raring to go.
Supported by industry leaders Neilson, Tushingham/Starboard, Windsurf magazine, Boards magazine and Neil Pryde, T15 was set up by the RYA to help make windsurfing more accessible and appealing to youngsters at a grass roots level.
Fun and informal training sessions take place at T15 clubs all over the country for kids up to the age of 15, which are run weekly by specialist RYA coaches.
The T15 inter-club championship takes place regionally over the summer adding a competitive edge and race training for those keen to hone their skills. Kit can be borrowed from the clubs and the cost of sessions is kept low – to find your local club visit www.team15.org.uk or contact the RYA on 0845 345 0400.
