Sam Masters returns for Somerset Rebels against Rye House Rockets

Cases Somerset Rebels will be looking to gain quick revenge for Saturday's six-point defeat at Rye House when the Rockets ‘land’ at the Oaktree Arena on Friday evening (7.30pm).

Rye House have already visited Somerset once this year, it being in an early season League Cup fixture with the Rebels running out comfortable 57-38 winners on that occasion.

But the Rockets have hit a rich vein of form of late that has seen them take victory at Ipswich and an away draw at Redcar.

Saturday’s meeting saw the Rockets devoid of their number one, Charlie Gjedde, who suffered a knee injury while racing for his Elite League side, Belle Vue, last Monday.

The visitors are currently awaiting the outcome of the Dane’s visit to see a specialist before deciding if he is fit to ride in Friday’s meeting. If he's not fit to ride, then Rye House can call upon a guest replacement.

The Rockets can count no less than three ex-Rebels in their line up, namely Jordan Frampton, Ritchie Hawkins and Swede Anders Mellgren, who had a short spell in Somerset colours last season, and when you add into the mix the likes of Jason Bunyan, a renowned exponent around the Oaktree Arena, the exciting young British talent, Jason Garrity and the Rockets skipper, Luke Bowen, then it is clear to see that Rye House have enough fire-power to potentially trouble the Rebels.

In saying that, however, Somerset hit top form last Friday in disposing of 2011 Premier League champions Glasgow Tigers, with four of the side hitting double-figure scores, and will go into Friday’s encounter with the Rockets confident of claiming all three league points.

After missing Saturday’s meeting at Rye House due to his participation in a Grand Prix Qualifying meeting, Somerset will welcome back Sam Masters into the line-up and are awaiting news on how Claus Vissing is progressing with his recovery from a punctured lung sustained at Sheffield nearly three weeks ago before deciding whether the popular Dane will be fit enough to ride in Friday’s match.

“Matches against Rye House always have a special edge to them,” said Rebels promoter Debbie Hancock, “which usually provides for an exciting meeting, and I am sure Friday’s encounter will be no different.

"We were disappointed not to get more from our match at Hoddesdon on Saturday, but a point is a good return when you consider Rye’s recent run of form, and we will be looking to add a further three league points to our tally come the end of Friday’s meeting.”
