A police horse named after First World War veteran Harry Patch is receiving a gift from the Royal British Legion.

He was presented with a blanket adorned with his name and a print of a commemorative poppy, to remind people of his late 111-year-old namesake, known as 'The Last Tommy'.

Harry conscripted into the Army at the age of 18 and fought in the trenches of the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917 in which more than 70,000 British soldiers died.

He was born in Combe Down, Bath, and worked as a firefighter in Bath in the Second World War

PC Jon Green, Harry Patch's trainer, said: "This is a real honour." Harry was presented with the blanket at Avon and Somerset police's Horse and Dog Unit at Bower Ashton.
