Wellington 3 Welton Rovers 4

Welton progressed to the semi-finals of the Somerset Premier Cup with a good all-round team performance against a determined Wellington side who played their part in an entertaining cup tie.

The goalfest started in the 10th minute when a quality ball out of defence from Timmy Thompson landed perfectly at the feet of Dean Evans, who used his pace to bisect the Wellington defence, round the keeper and fire into the empty net to give Welton an early lead.

On the half-hour, Welton got a second when Steve Bridges was set up by a neat pass from Ashley Lewis and Bridges fired in from 15 yards.

With five minutes remaining before half-time, Wellington pulled a goal back when Shane Kingston tapped in from close range after the Welton defence had failed to clear a cross from the right.

Within a minute of the restart after half-time the home side equalised when Graig Herod finished off a fine attacking move from Wellington that gave Tristan Westlake in the Welton goal no chance.

Welton responded in style and five minutes later they had regained their lead when centre back Greg Dando rose above the Wellington defence to meet a free-kick and head the ball over the keeper and into the net.

Welton got their fourth 10 minutes later when a good move involving Lee Bryant and Ashley Lewis saw the ball find Danny Maye out on the left and he attacked the goal and launched an unstoppable shot.

The home side got a late third goal when Dan Thompson scored from close range with virtually the last kick of the game.

Welton will play either Yeovil Town or Bishop Sutton in the semi-finals.
