Two goals from top-scorer Ross Stearn propelled Weston-super-Mare into a Blue Square Bet South play-off spot as they extended their unbeaten run to five games with a 2-0 defeat of Tonbridge Angels.

The home side came close to opening the scoring on five minutes when Ashley Kington’s 35-yard shot came back off the angle of post and bar.

Just before the break, Tonbridge goalkeeper Lee Worgan saved with his legs from Kayne McClaggon’s low effort and the striker put the rebound over.

Early in the second half, the visitors showed more life up front, but they failed to break down the Weston defence.

The hosts’ Dayle Grubb forced a good save from Worgan before they scored again on 68 minutes.

McClaggon burst through the defence, but again Worgan saved with his legs. However, Stearn picked up the rebound, beat the remaining defender and scored easily.

Tonbridge thought they had replied on 78 minutes when Chris Piper headed past home goalkeeper Lloyd Irish, but their celebrations were cut short by an offside flag.
