Rogue traders who charged £7,000 for half an hour's work wanted by police

Two rogue traders are being sought by police after demanding £7,000 for half an hour's work.

Police are appealing for information following an incident in Wells on January 4.

At approximately 1pm two men knocked on the door of an elderly woman in Hawkers Lane and said they were going to carry out roof repairs to the property.

After reportedly completing half an hour's work cleaning the guttering and fascia board, the men demanded £7,000 cash.

The woman said she would go to the bank to withdraw the money to pay them.

On the way to the bank the woman had concerns about the sum of money involved and whether she would be able to raise the cash so she spoke to a friend who advised her to contact the police.

However, by this time the men had left the woman's address.

Police are eager to speak to anyone who saw these men in and around the area of Hawkers Lane or saw an unfamiliar vehicle parked in Hawkers Lane at that time.

PC Wolstenholme at Wells police station said: "This sort of incident, although not commonplace, can cause the utmost stress and anxiety.

"The fact that on this occasion the victim is an elderly person makes the incident even more concerning."

Police advise anyone approached by unexpected callers offering to do work never to agree to the work on the spot. They say get three quotes in writing from reputable companies and speak to a family member or friend before making a decision.
