Registration has opened for a Westcountry cycling challenge which will see hundreds of people cycle 54 miles in aid of an air ambulance charity.

Some 600 places are available for the third annual Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge, which will help raise funds for Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

Last year, 543 cyclists took part and raised £56,000 through sponsorship.

In total, more than 29,000 miles were covered by the 543 riders in just less than seven hours. The money contributes to the £1.5 million the air ambulance needs to keep flying each year.

Cyclists can opt for the 54-mile route, or take an easier 11-mile option.

A spokesman for the charity said: “The event, which is not designed as a race, involves cycling through some of Dorset and Somerset’s most beautiful countryside.

“With only 600 places available and demand expected to be high, anyone wishing to enter should complete online registration as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.”

The 54-mile cycle starts in the Somerset port of Watchet and finishes at West Bay, near Bridport.

The shorter route begins at Drimpton in Dorset and also finishes at West Bay.

Entrance costs £10 for adults and £5 for under-16s. To register online visit www.dsairambulance.org.uk, or call 01823 669604.
