Riddle of the Frome Town footballer missing from 1909 team photograph
TAKE a good look at both of these pictures. See anything or anyone amiss?
Well, sisters Jayne Minty and Hilary Merrills did when they were looking through the Frome Standard nostalgia supplement a few weeks ago.
They came across the top picture while having a good look through and realised it was the Frome Town Football Club Team from 1909-10, in which their grandfather, Laurie Edwards, played.
That year the club won the West Wiltshire League. But the strange thing was, he did not feature in the photograph in the newspaper, despite the exact same picture sitting on their parents' wall for many years, with him stood proudly in the second left on the back row.
Miss Minty, of Beechwood Avenue, said she could not believe her eyes and had to look several times before realising he was not where he should have been.
She said: "I was looking with my sister, Hilary, and we could see there was a space where pops should have been. The photograph we have clearly positions him on the back row, second from the left.
"It's a real Agatha Christie mystery and we are sure it is the same picture as the hand gestures and facial expression are very similar."
Miss Minty is asking whether anyone else has a copy of the same picture to be able to compare.
The family have a long history with Frome Town Football Club and would love to solve the mystery.
A simple answer could be that he was not available for the original line-up and had to be added at a later date, which Dan Brown from Bath Library said could well be the case.
He said: "He was obviously missing when the group photo was taken but was maybe too important a player to be left out of the official photo."
