Released teenager upset after arrest over fatal Axbridge bypass crash

A teenage driver has been cleared of any involvement in the Axbridge bypass double fatality after being questioned by police.

Harrison “Harri” Sheppard, 17, was on his way home to East Brent from a friend’s house in Cheddar at the time of the accident when he came across the scene on Axbridge bypass on Sunday, October 7.

A second person in a white van arrived shortly after and called 999 and began putting a fire out while Harri called his friend for advice.

Mum Jackie said: “Harri didn’t know what to do and panicked. He was in shock. The paramedic arrived and asked him if he was OK but the van driver had left. Then the fire brigade turned up and told Harri to go away.”

Returning home and telling his parents all that happened, the teenager was taken to Bridgwater police station the next day and arrested for causing death by dangerous driving but released without charge – this means no further action will be taken unless police choose to re-arrest him.

Harri’s grandmother had to be taken to the station to collect him as Mrs Sheppard was told she and her husband could be classed as witnesses for hearing Harri’s account the night before.

Mrs Sheppard said: “The CID officer was extremely rude and said it was a murder inquiry.

“It was the way they treated him, the upset they put him through.

“We were sat for five to six hours in the car at Bridgwater station without being able to see him.”

A police spokesman could not comment on the situation but said the family can make an official complaint to the station inspector.

One man, aged 20, has been questioned and arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He was released on police bail pending further inquiries.
