Records of 'never events' made public
Health bosses are planning to shine the spotlight on NHS trusts that make basic, preventable mistakes when treating patients, reports suggest. NHS England is to publish quarterly lists of all "never events" recorded in the NHS, broken down by trust, the Health Service Journal reported. Such events are serious, largely preventable patient safety incidents which are never supposed to happen in the health service. Examples include "foreign objects" such as surgical tools or swabs left inside patients' bodies. Last year there were 299 such incidents in the NHS in England.
