Reassurance given over reporting of crime
POLICE in Langport have moved to reassure residents over how crime figures for the town are reported.
Last week the Western Gazette reported that councillors had been told violent and serious incidents are not included in police updated given to Langport Town council.
PC Toni Lines told a town council meeting that police do not want to needlessly raise fear of crime among elderly and vulnerable residents.
After the meeting, Inspector Jamie Rees said: "The reason for the policy on the figures is because what they mean and what people believe them to mean are often very different things and have been found to cause fear or distress to local residents. Violence against the person figures include domestic incidents, which we take very seriously but which don't affect the wider public as such. They also include a number of offences that don't involve physical violence, such as some incidents involving verbal abuse and other forms of communication, such as text messages."

Crime figures are readily available on the www.police.uk website but Inspector Rees said local figures cover a larger geographical area including Huish Episcopi and Curry Rivel. These areas are not included in the police report as they are not covered by Langport Town Council.
He said: "The town council and the local neighbourhood beat team have a good working relationship and continue to work together to tackle crime and other related issues in the area. I would like to reassure residents that incidents of violent crime are very low in the area and Langport is a safe place to live with a low crime rate."
Toni Lines is a PC and not a PCSO, as stated in last week's report.
