Rape charges from 1980s
A 47-YEAR-OLD man is to appear before a judge facing historic allegations of rape dating back to the 1980s in Shepton Mallet.
Shane Symes, of Mountview Place, Newtownabbey, County Antrim, is charged with two counts of raping a girl under the age of 16 between named dates in 1981 and 1982.
The matter was heard by District Judge Lynne Matthews, sitting at Yeovil. Symes was absent due to the geographical distance of his address and he did not enter any pleas through his solicitor Neil Priest.
She directed that the alleged offences were so serious that they could only be dealt with at the crown court.
