REVIEW: Puss in Boots, Shipham Players, Shipham Village Hall

I had not seen the pantomime Puss in Boots before but anticipated a good show with lots of the usual, ‘It’s behind you’, boos, hisses and most of all ‘oh no it isn’t and that’s exactly what I got.

For an amateur dramatic group in a small village Shipham Players shine always turning in a professionally staged show. The audiences certainly agreed, as for three of the four performances extra rows of seats were put in to satisfy demands for tickets.

With 19 principle roles it’s impossible to mention everyone by name, suffice it to say that faces well known to regular audiences did not disappoint and new members to the group were very good.

In particular it was encouraging to see younger members of the cast, some very young, whose talent had been nurtured previously, giving strong and confident performances.

The musical numbers under the direction of Jenny Jeffery provided high spots in the show, the goblins and demon nightmares rendering of, Evil, an Elvis classic, was great, and the Abba number, Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) nearly brought the house down.

Sound, sets and lighting contribute greatly to a successful show, these elements were all aesthetically pleasing and it was obvious that a huge amount of time and effort had been put in by the backstage members.

I believe this was one of the best production Shipham Players have done. It was pretty much flawless; everyone knew their lines and gave confident clear and rounded performances.

Yet again Daniel Jeffery, director and Debbie Andrews, producer, presented audiences with a great show. Shipham Players just get better and better showing that a lot of hard work and aiming for high standards pays off.
