Neroche Primary School in Broadway and Buckland St Mary Primary School were among those taking part.

Mr Wiles said: "It is an opportunity for the pupils to express their creativity. The Dahlicious Dress Up Day is a good idea and the pupils really put their hearts into it.

"Roald Dahl's work still seems to be as popular as ever."

Roald Dahl's Marvellous Children's Charity helps seriously ill children with neurological and blood disorders.

Mr Wiles said: "The charity helps pay for specialist nurses and equipment for seriously ill children. We get lots of requests from charities asking for support from schools and we have to make the tough decision as to which one we give our support to.

"This seemed a good thing to take part in. The school raised £135 which we think is pretty good."

Buckland St Mary teacher Rachael Auton, who dressed as Willy Wonka, added: "The children and parents made an amazing effort and every one had a peach of a day." The school raised £60.
