Pub Giant JD Wetherspoon came a step closer to arriving in Wells on Wednesday night when planners decided the former Emporium building in Priory Road was a suitable place for a pub.

Despite concerns raised by Priory Road resident Margaret Lever about anti-social behaviour, parking problems and the effect another pub could have on those already in the High Street, members of the planning board voted to allow a change of use of the property from retail to a public house.

Wells district councillor Danny Unwin abstained from the vote. "I am unhappy about this application," he said. "But for legal reasons it would be foolish to push for a refusal. I will not be voting."

Councillors voted eight in favour and four against the proposal, with one abstention.
