Promotion at the double for Yeovil
IT proved a memorable weekend for Yeovil and Sherborne Hockey Club, with their ladies' third team clinching their league championship and the men's fifth team securing promotion.
Mendip 2, Yeovil & Sherborne Ladies 2
Yeovil stayed at the top of the table after this hard-fought draw at Mendip but the dropped points ensure the r4mainder of the season will be a tough challenge.
Yeovil took an early two-goal lead through Barter and Coles, but it was a rare off-day as they allowed the home side to come back and equalise.
Old Bristolians 0, Yeovil & Sherborne Ladies 3
The following day Yeovil went into their fourth game in nine days, knowing they had to rediscover the form that had eluded them at Mendip.
Yeovil were a little slow to get going but with Watson leading from the front they found the openings and a series of penalty corners were awarded. From the second one Barter despatched the ball for the keeper to save and Walters to hammer it over the line.
The first goal was followed by a passage of great flowing hockey with the introduction of Lanfear and King adding a new dimension to the game and Parsons as usual always troubling the home defence. Lanfear took advantage of the play and was on hand to slot home the second goal.
Yeovil began the second-half determined to increase the scoreline and hit the same post three times. The goal came from a penalty corner routine where Parsons received the ball and fired home a stunning shot.
Beaminster Ladies 3, Yeovil & Sherborne Ladies 2nd XI 3
Yeovil got off to slow start with Beaminster scoring in the first 10 minutes. Yeovil fought back and Millie Bonney equalised. Yeovil began to pressure Beaminster, Bonney finding Zoe Hodson in the D for her to put Yeovil ahead with a reverse sweep into the back of the net.
After half-time Yeovil pushed again getting a short corner. Pushing out was Eve Hill to Di Darch who scored in the left hand corner to put Yeovil 3-1 up. Beaminster responded with another goal and in the dying seconds of the game Beaminster equalised.
Bournemouth Ladies 5th XI 2, Yeovil & Sherborne Ladies 3rd XI 3
Yeovil needed a win or a draw to secure the league title and duly obliged. They went ahead through Su Johnson but Bournemouth came back immediately to equalise.
Yeovil, however, kept their momentum and following a cross from Ellie Eastaugh, Johnson was denied on the line by a Bournemouth foot. Jo Stevenson took the resulting penalty flick and placed it perfectly in the bottom left hand corner.
After the break Yeovil kept on the pressure and a run from Frankie Titley up the right went to Eastaugh who crossed the ball to find Abi Green who swept the ball into the back of the net.
Bournemouth came back with another goal just before the end, but the result was enough to secure the Channel 2A League title for Yeovil.
Yeovil & Sherborne Ladies 4th XI 0, Blandford 4
A young Yeovil team fought hard against a strong, well-drilled Blandford side. Emily Senior had a key role in marking out one of the Blandford midfield players earning herself players' player.
Exeter University C 4, Yeovil & Sherborne Men's A 1
The Yeovil's men's A team were well beaten at Exeter, with Price scoring their consolation goal from a penalty corner.
Yeovil failed to deal with the Exeter penalty corner routine, with three of their four goals coming from set play.
The Yeovil B team had no fixture at the weekend, and the Yeovil C team won 3-0 away to Mid-Somerset A.
Yeovil & Sherborne D 5, Ashmoor B 1
Yeovil D chalked up a straightforward win over a very young Ashmoor side to secure promotion from their division. Their goals came from Kern Vickers (2), Barrie Izard, Jonathan Powe and Paul Masters.
