Privatisation of Royal Mail will be a failure
PROMPTED by Kye Rudd's Speakers' Corner article (Bristol Post September 20) on the privatisation of Royal Mail I must write, as a supporter of privatisation generally, to express my doubt on the logic of this proposal. Parliament has ensured that its competitors have every advantage and have also shackled Royal Mail with a ball and chain in the form of a liability to maintain uniform pricing for delivery of post to remote regions at the same price as can be charged for high density locations. Now they say "Go and race against the competition". The predictable result will be failure, sooner or later, with the appointment of an administrator or liquidator. What then will parliament decide? Nationalisation would appear to be the only option. Not an altogether logical process.
