Princess Primrose's on-stage marriage proposal during pantomime's final night

There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when Princess Primrose accepted a marriage proposal on stage in front of an audience of hundreds.

Particularly as the man on bended knee, nervously clutching a ring in one hand wasn’t reading from a script and had never set foot on a stage before.

The proposal took place on the final night of the Moorlight Theatre Production’s pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk, which was held in Street.

“We’ve been together for a few years, and we’d talked about marriage on and off, but I’d never really done much about it,” said 23-year-old Tom Perry, a mechanic at the Avalon Motor Company in Glastonbury.

“I was talking to her dad on New Year’s Eve and we came up with an idea of how I could ask her.”

Fully prepared, Tom bought the ring and arranged with the production manager to be allowed on stage to pop the question, as the cast took their final bow on the panto run.

“I wasn’t really nervous until I got to the Meyer Theatre,” Mr Perry said.

“They hooked me up with a mike and I went on from the wings with the ring in my hand.

“I still don’t know if I was more nervous about asking her, or being in front of all those people.”

Princess Primose – better known as 23-year-old teacher Kayleigh Wall – knew something was up when her mother, a member of the chorus – let out a delighted scream.

“That made Kayleigh turn around and I think that as soon as she saw me up there, she knew what was about to happen,” said Tom.

“It was completely unlike him,” said Miss Wall.

“He’s usually quite shy, and it was just so out of character for him.

“It was wonderful for me, because obviously Mum was in the chorus, but my brother, my grandparents and my Dad were all in the theatre as well, so they got to be a part of it all.”

Mr Perry said the moments between his proposal and her acceptance were something of a blur, but as the couple celebrated their betrothal, he was aware of a lot of happy tears amongst the cast, crew and audience members.

“I was always ever going to say yes,” Miss Wall said.

“But afterwards, I did think that perhaps I should’ve made a bit of a joke and said that I couldn’t accept as I’d just agreed to get married to Jack from the panto.

“My Mum and I have already started in the early stages of the wedding planning – looking a venues and so on.

“We haven’t set a date yet, but it’s very early days yet.

“We’re just both so happy – it certainly made for a very memorable end for my first panto season.”
