Alice is a friend of Kate and Pippa’s from their Marlborough College days and the bride’s family live near Bishops Lydeard. She married Gerald Avenel in an afternoon ceremony at St Mary’s Church conducted by Canon Ian Ainsworth-Smith and attended by about 300 guests.

Debate raged over the internet yesterday as to whether the rumours of a royal appearance were true, until pictures confirming it was indeed William and Kate were posted on Twitter.

They were pictured outside the church, while upon their arrival excited villagers ran to greet them as they drove into the village. Kate, wearing a pink dress and a cream hat, happily waved to locals.
