The Earl of Wessex yesterday gave the royal seal of approval to a £7 million restoration project at a Westcountry museum.

Prince Edward ushered in the new era for the Museum of Somerset when he toured the facility and cut a ribbon on The Glass Bridge, linking Goodland Gardens to the newly constructed Castle Green public space.

The Somerset date was the first stop in a day which also saw a stunning sundial gifted to the Queen to mark her Diamond Jubilee, accepted on her behalf by Prince Edward.

Devon has commemorated her 60 years on the throne by creating a six-metre stainless steel sundial at Roadford Lake, near Lifton. The six stainless steel pieces were incorporated to represent the six decades of reign and are surrounded by granite time pieces.
