Police are warning Shepton Mallet residents to be on their guard against fraudsters following a series of incidents in the area.

People in the town have been the targets of a gang who claim properties in the area have a drainage problem and contact details are required to rectify the issue. Within moments the occupants receive a phone call demanding money.

People are being warned that this is not legitimate and investigations are underway to trace the offenders. People in Bristol have also been targeted by the fraudsters, and similar scams have been reported in Kent, Sussex, Devon, Cornwall, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire.

Residents are being advised to follow this advice to prevent them becoming victims of such crimes:

If you're not sure who is at your door, check the identity of the caller by calling the company they are claiming to be from. Use the telephone number listed in your local directory or provided independently by your service provider. Don't use any telephone numbers provided by the caller – they may be bogus.

Genuine callers won't mind either waiting while you verify their identity or making an appointment for a date when you can have someone with you.

Keep doors locked and windows secure at all times.

Where possible, have a safety chain fitted and always attach the chain before opening the door to strangers.

Ensure that if you do let somebody in to your home, that you close the door behind them – distraction burglars often work in teams, where one will distract you while others sneak in through an unlocked door.

If somebody asks for your help – needs to make a telephone call, says they have lost a ball in your garden, need a drink or pen and paper, for example – don't invite them into your house. If you really want to offer help, make them wait outside while you fetch anything etc, and while away from your door close and lock it – or call a friend or neighbour to come and assist.

Remember it's your doorstep, your decision.

If in doubt, don't give your number out.

Anyone with information about those responsible for these crimes are asked to call police on 0845 456 7000 or alternatively call Crimestoppers on 0800 5555 111.

The warning comes in the wake of Shepton Town Council's support last month for the police's bid to introduce "no cold-calling" zones in certain areas of Shepton Mallet to clamp down on bogus callers and rogue traders targeting the elderly and vulnerable residents.
