Police and organisers of Midsomer Norton's Mardi Gras have warned that antisocial behaviour will not be tolerated at this year's event.

Last year underage drinkers, fighting and disorder cast a dark shadow over the Mardi Gras, prompting police to send out the message that a repeat could put the future of the event in doubt.

Insp Paul Kendall, from Radstock Police Station, said the force's endorsement of next year's licence depends on how difficult it is control unruly revellers at the celebrations on Saturday, July 11.

He also pointed out that young people should be aware that if they are underage and drunk they will pay the price.

Insp Kendall said: "We want the Mardi Gras to be a fun family event and ensure that troublemakers do not ruin it for people out to have a good time.

"As well as clamping down on the public disorder caused by underage drinking, we also want make sure young people are safe and to make them aware of the dangers of drinking excessive amounts of alcohol."

In the run up to the event, police have been talking to off-licences, supermarkets and pubs to remind shop staff of their responsibilities to ensure no one underage is served, and have vowed to carry out test purchases before and during the Mardi Gras to catch anyone selling booze to young teenagers.

They have also warned parents not to buy alcohol for under-18s.

Insp Kendall said: "Avon and Somerset Police want to send out a strong message that not only is it extremely irresponsible for adults to buy alcohol on behalf of under-18s, they are breaking the law and we will take strong action against offenders."

Hazel Franklyn, secretary of the Midsomer Norton and District Carnival committee, said: "As always, we will be co-operating 100 per cent with the police in their efforts to stop trouble.

"One of the problems is children bringing alcohol they have got from home to the event.

"It is not fair that a great day out for all ages is spoiled by an irresponsible minority."

Extra police will also be on patrol with seven security guards during the day.
