Police issue warning over spate of bike thefts in Street

Police in Street are warning cyclists to “lock it or lose it” after a spate of bike thefts from gardens, sheds and outbuildings.

Beat manager PC Kevin Stoodley said his team have been dealing with ‘numerous reports’ of bikes which had been stolen from their owners in the past fortnight.

Four bicycles have been stolen over the past couple of days.

They are calling on owners to invest in alarms, padlocks and chains to keep their bikes safely under lock and key.

A spokesman for the police said it was important for cyclists to make sure that their bikes were properly secured – even when they are at home.

“Wherever your bike is stored, in a garage, shed, or even your house, make sure it is secure at all times. As should the property where it’s being kept,” he said.

“People tend not to spend too much money on the security of a shed but it is often surprising the amount of property held there. If you have to leave your bike somewhere make sure it is properly secured at all times and if you have to leave it for any length of time make sure that it’s in a prominent position and consider the lighting as well.”

He said people should also have their bikes postcoded so that it can be easily identified if stolen.

“Bike thieves steal to order as there is a thriving black market for stolen bikes.”
