Police have confirmed they have received several phone calls reporting a dog being dragged behind a moving van in Haydon.

Eye witnesses say they saw a green van travelling up Haydon Hill with the dog being pulled along behind it at around 4.30pm on Friday, January 4. They say the driver then stopped and threw the dog into the back of the van, leaving blood marks on the road. A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said it was not known if the dog survived the ordeal and that searches for the van on police databases had not brought up a result.

People on Facebook, have called for the driver of the van to be prevented from owning animals again in the future regardless of whether the incident was an accident.

“I know the family concerned and I do not think that they should have the right taken away from them to own other animals as a result of this tragic accident. I have been in contact with the family and know that they reported the incident to the police themselves and also rushed the dog to the vets for treatment. Lets let the family grieve for their dog as there are far worse crimes being committed and worse cases of animal cruelty!”
